Abstract

Purpose: To develop artificial retina simulator using eye-gaze controlled image acquisition for investigating effective stimulate pattern of artificial retina prior to clinical trial.
Methods: Pupil center coordinates was acquired using eye tracker and then mapped into those of external image. Geometry around eye-gaze in scene image was converted to the simulated phosphene image. The effectiveness of developed system was verified with two normal subjects by object recognition experiments.
Results: The direction of eye-gaze in scene image was successfully obtained in real-time. Experimental results showed an object recognition rate of 80% with the simulation of 144 microelectrode arrays.
Conclusions: To develop artificial retina system, eye tracking based artificial retina simulator was developed and its effectiveness was verified.
